Senior Camper Beach Day

Beachday 032

Yesterday was Senior Camper beach day!

Beachday 034

We brought some big red flags so the campers would always be able to spot our area.

Beachday 041

Time to hit the sand.

Beachday 043

It was a perfect, warm and sunny day, and since it was Monday it was also easy to find plenty of space to park our campers...

Beachday 065

...who wasted no time jumping in the water!

Beachday 071

The swells were small but enough to give everyone some fun.

Beachday 075

The waves were big enough for a little body surfing and Boogie Boarding too.

Beachday 077

Some campers were better at it than others.

Beachday 084

Kennolyn Camps; where else can campers spend the morning in the surf and the afternoon in the redwoods?

Day Camp Friday Funday!

Last Friday Day Camp celebrated their Friday Funday with a 4th of July theme.

DSC_0464

'Pin the tail on the donkey' is always a hit - even if the camper's aim is not.

DSC_0483

Face painting also took on a patriotic theme!

DSC_0475

There was plenty of fun to be had in arts and crafts...

DSC_0481

...where the campers made little American flags.

DSC_0489

The 'find the jelly bean in the whip cream' contest was particularly popular. Because win or lose, you got a mouthful of whip cream and a jelly bean!

DSC_0486

Bowling was also a lot of fun - Uncle Sam hat optional.

DSC_0463

Finally, the campers got the opportunity to dunk their favorite counselor in the dunk tank.

DSC_0461

You can tell by his expression that John wasn't expecting this throw to hit the target. Either that, or the water is very cold!

Kennolyn-imation!

This year, one of the activities our campers get to choose from is a class in Cartooning! This activity is available because cartooning and animation are my expertise - and I am teaching the class all summer.

In addition to covering the basics of cartooning (basic drawing construction, face and body language, story, character design etc.) we also cover the basics of animation and the campers get to do some animation exercises of their own.

With the magic of computers, I'm even able to create animated GIFs from these exercises!

Briggs animated a baseball bat and ball:

Daniel animated a face changing from happy to angry:

Kristen animated a tether ball:

Kristin_Kennolyn_Animation

Stella animated a guy jumping up and down:

Stella_Kennolyn_Animation

Clara animated a girl not only jumping up and down, but yelling "Hi!" as well:

Clara_Kennolyn_Animation

Jack animated a boxer punching a heavy-bag:

Unfortunately one more camper, Kelly, was unable to attend the last day when I collected most of these from the campers. So if you read this, please email me a scan of your animation drawings! Kelly did a neat animation of her mouse character waving his arm up and down.

Thanks to all the campers who made my first Kennolyn Cartooning class a hit, and I look forward to many more great sessions in 2009!

Session 1 Has Begun!

Resident Camp Session 1 has begun!

Session 1, our first two-week sleepaway session of 2009, is officially under way.

DSC_0031

Of course we here at Kennolyn waste no time getting into the summer camp groove, so today is as busy as any with almost as many activities going on simultaneously as there are trees in our forest.

Newly added to our climbing wall this year is a Bouldering section which allows campers to practice their lateral climbing skills while staying relatively close to the ground.

DSC_0077

After every session the camp is a flurry of activity as campers move from one activity to the next.

DSC_0057

This portion of our ropes course requires campers to climb to the top of a tree and leap off, grasping for a trapeze swing as they fly (safely, of course) through mid air among the treetops!

DSC_0074

And speaking of trapeze, one of our KC Select activities is an actual trapeze!

DSC_0017

Here's the entire set-up...quite an impressive sight to behold. It feels like the circus is in town.

DSC_0020

There's so much going on here, it seems impossible to get pictures of it all. But we're trying our best to get as many pictures as we can for the blog and Parent Communicator. So check in on us often!

Resident Camp 2009 has begun!

Even though it seems like it began only yesterday, our very first session for 2009 is almost over!

It's true what they say; "Time flies when you're having fun!"

The kids have really been enjoying all of their activities:

PreCamp2009Tuesday 006

Here is a group of campers playing guitar. Some kids already have experience with the activities they've chosen and some are trying completely new things!

PreCamp2009Wednesday 036

This group of kids (including the baby goat, which I guess is also technically a "kid,") are taking part in animal care.

PreCamp2009Wednesday 050

Kennolyn has many traditional summer camp activities, riflery being one of them. Not surprisingly, this activity tends to be pretty popular with boys!

PreCamp2009Wednesday 056

Outdoor cooking is also very popular. In addition to learning how to start a fire and outdoor fire safety, campers learn about boiling water for safe drinking and other survival skills.

Parents, be sure to log in to your Parent Communicator account in order to see more exciting photos from Kennolyn and to send emails to your campers!

Hired! From Campfires to Career

For Mark Gentry, strong bonds from summer camp led to a great job after college.

By Jessica Dickler, CNNMoney.com staff writer
June 16, 2009: 11:32 AM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Facebook has become the playground for finding old friends, but for some job seekers, it can also be the key to finding employment.

Like most college students, Mark Gentry had a Facebook page he used to stay connected to friends. It didn't factor much into his job search, which was languishing even before he graduated from Stetson University in DeLand, Fla.

Nearly two-thirds of the college class of 2009 are concerned about finding a job, according to a new study conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Gentry was one of them.

"Like many of my fellow classmates, landing a job right out of college seemed very dim," said the recent graduate with a degree in management and a minor in finance. "I applied to over a hundred online postings and only got one legitimate response," which didn't result in a job offer, he added.

So Gentry turned his attention to a fall-back job in construction along side his father, until he received a friend request through Facebook from Kevin, a childhood acquaintance.

Kevin had been Gentry's camp counselor at the YMCA in Gainesville, Fla., over a decade ago. Like many Facebook connections, Kevin stumbled upon Gentry's profile and reconnected after a dozen years.

"We talked back and forth for a while catching up on how each other were doing and reminiscing about the past," Gentry said.

"Kevin asked me what my plans were after graduation and I told him how finding a job seemed nearly impossible."

But Kevin worked for a software engineering firm in Fort Collins, Colo. that was hiring. He put Gentry in touch with the recruiter and then the hiring manager.

After several extensive phone interviews, Gentry landed a job as an education program specialist, responsible for coming up with strategies to get schools and universities to utilize their software packages. He promptly moved 1,800 miles from home just days after graduation. His new boss? Kevin, his old camp counselor.

"I am truly a fortunate person to have gotten the job that I did," Gentry said. "It goes to show you, you never know who will have an impact on your future," he added.
Social networking to success

Our career experts agree that in today's job market, social networking plays a very important role in the hunt for work.

"As social media has blossomed, more and more business connections happen on Facebook," said social media expert and president of Affect Strategies Sandra Fathi.

Because users can easily connect with fellow alumni from elementary school, high school, camp, college and so on, it's "a great way to broaden your network," Fathi said.

And when it comes to job hunting, generally the more people you connect with the better, added Barbara Safani, President of Career Solvers in New York. "You want a lot of diversity in your network," she said. "Anybody is a potential contact for a job search."

But those looking to make career connections through Facebook or other social networking sites should keep their profiles professional, the experts said, and that means taking down questionable pictures or comments that could be misconstrued.

"You don't have to make it devoid of personality, but you also want to make sure you don't have objectionable content or highly charged content up there," Fathi said.

"Just don't position yourself in a way that your credibility could be compromised," Safani warned.

Wow! What a Garden!

MiaGardenJune16th 001

With less than a week until Kennolyn's first session of summer camp 2009 begins, Mia's Garden is almost in full bloom!

MiaGardenJune16th 004

Kennolyn is very grateful to Mia and she has every right to be proud of her awesome garden. She has put in hours and hours of hard work and dedication, and even though there's still plenty of time before the harvest, the results speak for themselves.

MiaGardenJune16th 009

Everything is so thick and green...

MiaGardenJune16th 010

...well, the carrots are still puny, but give them time and they'll be huge too!

MiaGardenJune16th 007

The lettuce bed requires a little shade to prevent the leaves from getting burnt by the sun.

MiaGardenJune16th 011

Mia is also growing spearmint and other spices and accents like cilantro and oregano. Yum!

MiaGardenJune16th 015

Mia tends to her garden.

MiaGardenJune16th 017

Dig it.

MiaGardenJune16th 022

The tomato plants are getting huge, and we're likely to have hundreds of tomatoes this season!

MiaGardenJune16th 018

Great job, Mia! I bet we see a ton of vegetables before our next installment!

Camps for a Cause Update

EBay_Kennolyn

Kennolyn's "Camps for a Cause" eBay auction has met it's reserve!

This means that now all the money bid above the reserve will go to either The Caldwell Foundation or to the accredited public or private K-12 school of the winning bidder’s choice, with the donations being made in the winning bidder's name!

Our auction ends Sunday, as do all the other current Camps for a Cause auctions. Be sure to follow closely and give it a bid, there's still time to help a worthy cause and to get a great deal in the process!

May 29, 2009

Send your child to summer camp and support a worthy cause!

A group of California camps have gotten together to raise money for schools and encourage kids to go to summer camp. Using E-Bay, the new group called Camps For a Cause, will sell sessions at their camps with low reserve prices. Whatever is bid for the camp sessions above the reserve amount will go to the winning bidder’s school. “This is actually a win-win-win situation” said Andrew Townsend, Director of Kennolyn Camps. “The camps can welcome another camper to experience summer camp, the winning bidder gets to send their child on an amazing camp adventure, and the winning bidder’s school gets a nice donation.”

The traditions and customs of Summer Camp are alive and well at
Gold Arrow Camp, Shaffer’s High Sierra Camp, Catalina Island Camp, and Kennolyn Camps but they didn’t want to miss out on the world’s largest online marketplace and the chance to raise money for schools in times of budget cuts and teacher layoffs. “E-Bay makes great sense for us," says Scott Shaffer of Shaffer’s High Sierra Camp. “We are always trying to reach out to potential new campers and find ways to contribute to our community.  Camps For a Cause helps us do both of these things at the same time.”

Bidders may also get a bargain. While the respective camps set each session’s reserve price, some reserves are as low as 30% of the published price. “We hope that people will bid up the items to ensure that the schools get a healthy contribution but someone could get the deal of a lifetime” said Tom Horner, owner of Catalina Island Camps. Steve Monke of Gold Arrow Camps hopes to see this pilot project expand. “Children really need the opportunities that camp offers” he says, “the chance to really connect with people and our natural world is a vital stage in a child’s development and camp allows children to explore these relationships in a fun and caring environment. The chance to get more children involved in camp and help schools is a great idea.”

Interested bidders can find the camp sessions by searching on the camp names within E-bay, by searching for “summer camp,” or by following THIS LINK to Camps for a Cause's current auction listings.

Campers do not need to worry that technology will take over the camp experience. "We will never gather round the glow of a computer to sing camp songs and tell stories," says Townsend. “Camp will always be a human experience, even if we use technology to spread the word about our camps."
